[ Craft of Architecture Project, 2021 ]

A single story coastal home in Durban, South Africa built on a steeply sloping site with panoramic views over the Indian Ocean. The house is built almost entirely in steel and designed as a simple ‘pavilion’ in an open plan form, arranged around a central courtyard to allow for free-flowing inside/outside living. The courtyard benefits from optimal solar orientation and provide protection from the coastal winds. Extensive areas of openable glazing, combined with a lightweight floating steel roof to provide solar shading and maximise the outlook to the ocean views from all areas of the home.

Project designed and completed under William Flint’s Directorship at Craft of Architecture. William was a Partner at COA until 2021, leading their Durban studio of 15 professional architectural staff.
