[ Craft of Architecture Project, 2021 ]
A two-storey modernist home overlooking the Indian Ocean, on Durban’s sub-tropical North Coast. The house is set into the hillside, with a simple U shaped plan form; open plan living spaces and three bedrooms arranged around a central sunny courtyard, protected from the wind. The living and entertainment spaces are framed on both sides with minimalist glazing allowing for expansive views to the Indian Ocean and tropical coastal forest.
The upper floor structure is intended to be more lightweight in feel, supported on slender steel posts to give the appearance of floating above the more solid ground floor ‘base’. The house is finished in a simple palette of white painted brick, painted steelwork and exposed concrete.
Project designed and completed under William Flint’s Directorship at Craft of Architecture. William was a Partner at COA until 2021, leading their Durban studio of 15 professional architectural staff.
